What to Pack for a Sahara Desert Tour in Morocco

A practical Sahara packing list covering layers, footwear, sun protection, luggage, cameras and desert camp essentials.

Knowing what to pack for a Sahara desert tour makes the journey more comfortable, especially because desert temperatures can change quickly. You do not need specialist expedition equipment for a private Merzouga trip, but a few thoughtful choices make a real difference.

Wear light layers

Choose breathable clothing for daytime and carry a warm layer for evening. Desert nights can be cold from late autumn through early spring. A light insulated jacket, long trousers and a comfortable top are more useful than relying on one heavy item.

Choose practical footwear

Comfortable closed shoes or supportive sandals work for stops and camp. Sand enters almost everything, so avoid bringing your most delicate footwear. Socks are useful at night, and simple slip-on shoes make moving around camp easy.

Protect yourself from sun and wind

Pack sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm and a hat. A lightweight scarf is helpful for sun, wind and blowing sand. Your guide can show you a practical way to wrap it without turning it into a costume.

Use a small overnight bag

Main luggage normally remains safely with the vehicle or is transferred separately according to camp arrangements. Carry a small soft bag for water, a warm layer, toiletries, medication and camera equipment. Confirm the luggage process for your specific camp before departure.

Prepare cameras and phones

Charge devices before the camel ride and carry a compact power bank. Keep cameras in a case when wind lifts sand, and avoid changing lenses outdoors. Some camps have electricity, but charging access and signal quality vary.

Bring personal essentials

Carry prescription medication, tissues, hand sanitizer and a reusable water bottle. A small headlamp can be helpful even when pathways are lit. Travel insurance details and copies of important documents should remain accessible throughout the tour.
